Dr Gabriella Day explores the relationship between faith, medicine, and belief

In Church, Medicine, the Heretic and the Witch, Dr Gabriella Day invites us to look beyond the surface of modern medicine and consider how its foundations have been shaped over centuries.

Drawing on her experience as a GP and homeopath, Gabriella explores how illness is not always simply physical, but can be influenced by the beliefs and pressures individuals carry. In her work, she has observed how deeply held ideas about duty, suffering, and what it means to endure can affect both mental and physical health.

Historic church interior representing early Christian history and belief
The history of the Church plays a key role in shaping cultural beliefs.

This talk takes a wider historical view, tracing the origins of the Church and examining how certain interpretations of Christianity became dominant, while others were dismissed as heretical. As these narratives developed, so too did approaches to healing.

From early traditions rooted in herbal knowledge and spiritual practice, often led by women, medicine gradually shifted into a more formalised and male-dominated field. The influence of the Church played a significant role in this transformation, shaping what was accepted, what was challenged, and what was left behind.

Traditional herbal medicine and the early healing practices
Early healing practices were rooted in herbal knowledge and spiritual traditions.

As the evening unfolds, Gabriella will explore the parallels between these historical shifts and the way modern medicine has developed. Questions around authority, belief, and what is considered acceptable knowledge remain just as relevant today.

Blending history, medicine, and philosophy, this is a talk that invites reflection as much as discovery. It offers a different perspective on the systems and stories that continue to shape our understanding of health and healing.

Each ticket includes a complimentary wine, beer or soft drink.
