The French Prisoners of Alresford and the Parole Towns

Join local historian Russell for a captivating exploration of Alresford’s surprising role in the history of French prisoners of war during the early 19th century. A lifelong history enthusiast and retired landscape architect, Russell has spent years researching the stories behind the French officers buried in St John’s churchyard – and separating fact from the colourful myths that have grown around them.
This talk traces how his curiosity about these tombs led to a wider investigation into the parole system, which allowed captured officers to live in designated towns across Britain under strict conditions of honour and trust. In 1810, French prisoners made up an astonishing 20% of Alresford’s population, shaping daily life and local society in remarkable ways.
Russell will also explore what happened to prisoners deemed “untrustworthy,” including the grim realities of prison hulks and war camps, and share dramatic tales of escape attempts – full of ingenuity, deception, and the lure of a short sea crossing home.
