The first talk of our 2026 Midweek Musings lecture series was presented by lifelong bus enthusiast and former CEO of Reading Buses, James Freeman.

This richly illustrated talk explored the remarkable story of King Alfred Motor Services, charting its rise, decline and enduring legacy. James shone a light on the vital work of the Friends of King Alfred Buses, whose dedication preserves these historic vehicles and ensures they remain operational for future generations.

Drawing on his experience as an industry leader and a passionate supporter of transport heritage, James offered a unique perspective on why King Alfred Buses continue to hold a special place in Winchester’s cultural identity. As a founder of the Friends of King Alfred Buses, he remains central to the company’s ongoing story and its connection to the local community.

Adventures to the Southern Hemisphere

We invited you to step into a world of exploration, resilience, and daring ambition as Edward Rochead and Dan Snow took us on journies to the farthest reaches of the Southern Hemisphere. From the frozen depths of the Weddell Sea to the sun‑scorched skies above Australia, this special evening promised stories that have shaped history and continue to inspire us today.

Adventures to the Southern Hemisphere brought together extraordinary stories of exploration, innovation, and human spirit from the roar of an aircraft engine over the Outback to the icy silence of Antarctica.

The talk delved into remarkable journeys of exploration, the courage behind them, and the lasting impact of these moments in history.

Faking Jewels: A Tudor Winchester Whodunnit

How did Tudor Winchester become a centre for hundreds of counterfeit gemstones? Uncover a glittering tale of deception, ambition and upheaval in 16th-century England

Alison Whitaker traces the story from the fake jewels discovered on the former Shrine of St Swithun at Winchester Cathedral – and its dramatic destruction under Henry VIII – Alison will present new research from her book The Jewel Forger of Winchester: A Composition of Sources.

This talk delves into the covert trade of counterfeit gemstones and its direct links to Winchester during the 16th century with particular reference to the social build up and the characters involved.
