We are nearly halfway through our 2026 Midweek Musings series and what a start it has been! If you enjoy history but want to experience it in a deeper way, these evenings offer something truly special. Hearing historians speak in person brings stories vividly to life.
There is the chance to ask questions, discover new sources, and share the experience with others who are just as curious about the past as you are!
Our series began in January with a fascinating talk from James Freeman on King Alfred Buses: Then and Now. His talk explored the story of Winchester’s beloved heritage buses and the volunteers who have kept them running. For many in the audience it was a nostalgic journey through the city’s transport history, while others discovered the story of these iconic buses for the very first time!
February then brought us an evening of adventure! Dan Snow and Ed Rochead took us from the icy depths of Antarctica to the skies above Australia at our special double-billed event, Adventures to the Southern Hemisphere. Ed shared the story of pioneering aviator Amy Johnson, tracing her daring long distance flights and the determination that made her one of the most inspiring figures in early aviation.
Dan Snow followed with the story of Shackleton’s Endurance and its remarkable discovery beneath Antarctic ice, giving a behind the scenes glimpse into the expedition that captured global attention. It was an evening filled with exploration, endurance, and extraordinary journeys!

Our next Midweek Musings talk welcomes Alison Whitaker with Faking Jewels: A Tudor Winchester Whodunnit. This intriguing talk delves into a remarkable Tudor era mystery involving counterfeit jewels and deception in the city of Winchester. Expect a story of intrigue, investigation, and unexpected twists as Alison uncovers the details behind this historical puzzle!
